Nike Gives Air Jordan 11s A High-Tech Self-Lacing Makeover

Nike has taken a decidedly high-tech route to honour one it’s most revered classics, styling Jordan’s favourite pair with a futuristic update.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the first sketches for the Air Jordan 11 by legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield, which would set the standard for laceless designs, Nike’s design team have updated the footwear benchmark by taking the approach of adding new power lacing technology while also remaining true to the original silhouette of the classic sneaker, reports Business Insider.

The design has upped the ante even further by incorporating Nike’s Adapt technology throughout the sneaker, giving it the name Air Jordan XI Adapt. The wearer can customise his sneakers instantly using the Jordan-branded Adapt app, allowing personalisation of the colour scheme and flashing pattern of the light clusters in the mid-sole.

The same app also works with the power lacing setup, allowing the shoe to be tweaked efficiently for optimal comfort and performance.

The self-lacing tech is housed within the frame of the beloved Jumpman icon, which makes the sole a tiny bit bulkier than the original AJ11s. There are + and - buttons with the neutral midsole in a slightly translucent synthetic, which perfectly compliments the icy sole outfitting the underfoot.

Aside from the top half’s Adapt tech and ripstop fabrication, the shoe retains the heritage elements such as the lateral Jumpman logo, the ’23’ stamp at the heel, and Nike’s signature patent mudguard.

The white, translucent upper and selective strokes of bright colour mean the XI Adapt is without a doubt a sporty shoe, but that doesn’t mean it’s limited to the basketball court.

The original and classic Air Jordan 11 was developed by Tinker Hatfield after Michael Jordan himself requested a shoe with patent leather that would look good even for more formal occasions. The unorthodox result became Jordan’s favourite.

This new version features those same glossy elements, that highlights every contour of the sleek pair, but this time with a somewhat ghostly, futuristic feel.

Nike has a long history of developing self-lacing sneakers, even if they originally were a work of pure science fiction. The sneaker giant first showed off a pair of self-lacing kicks in the first Back To The Future film, before making the concept a reality back in 2016, after there was an incredible demand for the futuristic styling.

All of the components have been styled and developed over the years to produce a more sophisticated model, which has a smoother operation and is very likely to prove to be a much-sought-after and incredibly popular model.

The Air Jordan XI Adapt sneakers launched at 10 am on 30 December for $500 (currently going for between £580 and £650 on StockX), which is perfect for those who have money burning a hole in their pocket after failing to secure a PlayStation 5!
