There’s only one show worth watching right now and that’s HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, a really fast-paced and exciting series charting the professional and personal lives of the LA Lakers during the 80s, chronicling their stratospheric rise to the top… and all the tribulations that befall them along the way.
The ensemble cast is an amazing one and John C Reilly puts in an incredible performance as Lakers owner Jerry Buss, but look out for the likes of Adrien Brody, Sally Field, Jason Segel, Jason Clarke and Quincy Isaiah, as well.
So many magnetic personalities in one show only means one thing… you’ll be bingeing it before you know it. That being said, the second series isn’t out just yet so you may want to eke it out a little to prolong the fun.
The soundtrack is great (here’s the official Spotify playlist for the series) and it’s shot in a brilliant low-fi way that really makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time and are right there with the Lakers, one of the most revered and dominant dynasties in all of sport.
Watch out for the bit where Magic Johnson casually turns his back on a sponsorship deal with one of the world’s biggest footwear brands… we won’t tell you which one it is, but it’s a decision he may well still regret to this day!
The series has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 84 per cent, although you might like to take some of the scenes with a pinch of salt, as the accuracy of some of the content has been called into question. That being said, however, it’s still a very compelling watch… and you’ll be clamouring for season two before you know it.
